MADISON, Wis. - No. 11 Wisconsin took down Drexel on Sunday in a dominant 37-3 victory and welcomed Badger fans back to the UW Field House for the first time this season in great fashion.
Nine of Wisconsin's ten wrestlers picked up wins.
Eric Barnett,
Garrett Model, and
Braxton Amos all won by major decision.
Joseph Zargo and
Trent Hillger both won by tech fall, with Hillger getting his quickly at the 1:59 mark with a 16-0 shutout over Drexel's Liam Dietrich.
An early scare from Drexel's Luke Nichter saw
Austin Gomez get 'knocked on his head' within the first tens seconds, drawing oohs from the crowd, but Gomez fought his way out of the dangeous position and turned the bout quickly. Gomez pinned Nichter at 1:42 to secure six team points for the Badgers.
Badgers Taylor Lamont,
Josh Otto, and
Dean Hamiti all won by decision.
The Badgers hosted the 2022 Wisconsin Wrestling Showcase with a concurrent NCAA Division II dual match between UW-Parkside and McKendree and a NCAA Division III match between UW La Crosse and Cornell (Iowa). Parkside defeated McKendree 24-14 and La Crosse defeated Cornell 38-6 for a state of Wisconsin schools sweep in the Field House. Hosted in 2021 by La Crosse, the event will be hosted by Parkside in 2023.
"This event means the world to me," said Wisconsin head coach
Chris Bono. "We have a Big Ten schedule that we can't (schedule) around, so to get an event like this is awesome. We are going to keep trying to grow it and next year we are taking it to Parkside. We are going to show kids in Wisconsin that there is no reason to leave (the state). We have great programs on all three levels. This is how you grow wrestling right here."
He also had very great outlook on the Badgers' results, "I thought out guys did a great job," he added. "Our guys are fired up, we are healthy now and I couldn't be happier."
Wisconsin now has a two-week hiatus as they prepare for the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on December 29-30 hosted by Northwestern.
