LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Wisconsin men's and women's swimming teams are in San Diego for winter break training and will also compete against UC San Diego on Friday. The meet start at 3 p.m. CT at the Canyonview Aquatic Center.
Here are five things to know for this weekend.
1. ELITE COMPANY: In the most recent CSCAA rankings, the Badger women are ranked 16th after competing in the Minnesota Invitational in early December, facing previous No. 1 Texas and No. 14 California. The men's team earned the 24th slot after competing against No.1 Texas and No.2 California at the Minnesota Invitational.
2. UNDEFEATED IN DUAL: The Badger women are currently undefeated (3-0) in dual matchups this season. The UW men's team enter this weekend 2-1 in dual meets after falling to No. 5 Arizona State at the start of the season.
3. SIZZLIN' BACON: After finishing with three top-three finishes medals at the Minnesota Invitational, junior
Phoebe Bacon looks to remain undefeated in dual meets in the backstroke events. Bacon was recognized as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week after earning three NCAA B cut times at Minnesota. She placed second in the 200 IM in 1:55.13, third in the 200 back in 1:51.22, and third in the 100 back with a time of 51.40. Both of her backstroke times are the fastest in the conference this season.
4. NEW MARKS FOR NEWMARK: The most recent Big Ten Swimmer of the week recipient for the Badger men, junior
Jake Newmark, looks to continue his success in distance freestyle this weekend. Newmark earned three NCAA B cuts at the Minnesota Invitational, performing best in the 200 back, placing second with a season-best mark of 1:41.59. He also took third in the 200 free and sixth in the 500 free.
