Sophomore among best shooting guards in college basketball
MADISON, Wis. – Johnny Davis continued to bolster his resume as the best player in college basketball, as the sophomore was announced Tuesday as one of 10 watch list members for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball.
Davis becomes the first Badger to be recognized to a Jerry West Award watch list.
This year's Jerry West Award Top 10 candidates include: Bennedict Mathurin (Arizona), Adam Flagler (Baylor), Izaiah Brockington (Iowa State), Ochai Agbaji (Kansas), TyTy Washington (Kentucky), Jaden Ivy (Purdue), Buddy Boeheim (Syracuse), Johnny Juzang (UCLA), Justin Moore (Villanova) and Davis.
Just yesterday, Davis was named to the Wooden Award Late-Season Top 20 as a candidate for National Player of the Year. The La Crosse, Wisconsin native was also named to the Lute Olson Award National Player of the Year midseason watch list earlier this season.
Davis is the only player in the Big Ten and just one of three major conference players to lead his team in points (21.4 ppg), rebounds (7.9 rpg) and assists (2.5 apg) this season. The 2021 Maui Invitational MVP, Davis is a two-time Big Ten Player of the Week honoree, while also garnering national player of the week honors from the Naismith Trophy (1/10) and Oscar Robertson Trophy (1/11).
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. In late February, the watch list of 10 players for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to 5. In March those finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
The winner of the 2022 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Point Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award, in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
