Westerman’s Badgers bolster roster with Swedish junior national champion
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's tennis team has added a junior national champion to its ranks with the signing of Michael Minasyan for the 2022-23 season.
Minasyan will join the Badgers following an accomplished juniors career in his native Sweden and beyond. The Stockholm native claimed the Swedish U-18 national championships in both singles and doubles play and has represented his homeland in the European championships at both the U-14 and U-18 levels.
"We are thrilled to add a player like Michael to our team," UW head coach Danny Westerman said. "He has a fantastic junior pedigree and will make an immediate impact on program. He has played some of the best players in the world while on the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors and is a national junior champion in Sweden."
Minasyan has been ranked as high as No. 113 in the International Tennis Federation's world junior rankings and holds a Universal Tennis Ranking (UTR) of 12.35.
He has participated in several ITF junior tournaments, winning doubles titles in both Grade 2 and Grade 3, as well as reaching the singles final in Grade 2 competition.
"Michael has extremely high goals both academically and athletically," Westerman said, "and we cannot wait to get on the court with him to help him grow in his time here and prepare him for the pro tour after college."
