MADISON, Wis. - Celebrating Senior Day at the UW Field House, No. 8 Wisconsin closed its dual-match season with a hard-fought 19-16 victory over Ivy League powerhouse and No. 11 Cornell on Sunday.
Prior to the match, Wisconsin honored six seniors: Devin Bahr, Anders Lantz, Andrew McNally, Garrett Model, Andrew Salemme and Chris Weiler.
In a tightly-contest battle, the Badgers (12-2 overall, 6-2 Big Ten) and Big Red split the dual with five victories a piece in the individual match-ups.
Ranked sixth in the country by Intermat, Wisconsin true freshman Dean Hamiti (165) extended his notable season to 20-1 overall with a pin in 3:16 against No. 9 Julian Ramirez. This now marks the 17th victory for Hamiti with bonus points and his seventh pin, no doubt adding to his notables as one of the NCAA's most dominant wrestlers (7th overall in the nation).
Opening the match at 133, Kyle Burwick earned an upset of No. 32 Dominic LaJoie with a 6-4 decision to put the Badgers on the scoreboard first. Teammate and true freshman No. 32 Joseph Zargo extended the Badgers' early lead with a 21-9 major decision against Cornell's James Wilson.
One of the Badgers six seniors being celebrated at the final home match, No. 30 McNally earned a 7-2 decision over Andrew Berreyesa. Heavyweight Trent Hillger, ranked No. 11 in the country, earned a solid 6-2 decision against No. 16 Lewis Fernandes.
Wisconsin kept points close in the team score with narrow decisions in four of the five losses.
The Badgers next competition is the 2022 Big Ten Championships hosted by Nebraska, March 5-6. Seedings and the UW lineup will be announced soon. Full results from Sunday's match are below.
