Senior forward signs PTO, contract with AHL franchise
MADISON, Wis. – Senior forward Roman Ahcan has signed a professional tryout (PTO) contract and an AHL contract for 2022-23 with the Cleveland Monsters, the organization announced on Thursday.
"When I came here, my goals were focused on being a Wisconsin Badger," Ahcan said. "Now I have the opportunity to continue to play hockey and I'm really excited to get things going and show them what I have."
Ahcan, a Savage, Minnesota, native, finished his Badger career with 34 goals and 74 points in 130 games played. The alternate captain posted five goals and 12 points in 34 games during the 2021-22 campaign.
A two-time Academic All-Big Ten player and a personal finance major, the 5-foot-9 and 175-pound forward was part of UW's 2021 Big Ten Championship-winning squad during a nine-goal and 22-point season.
The team's Spike Carlson-Chris Chelios MVP for the 2019-20 season, Ahcan led the team and shared the Big Ten lead with four game-winning goals to go along with 14 goals and 25 points. His 14 goals that sophomore season ranked second on the team.
That season, he recorded UW's first five-point game in nine years and tallied a hat trick in the victory over Arizona State on Feb. 21. He earned Big Ten First Star of the Week and NCAA Star of the Week for the six-point weekend. He was also a Big Ten Second Star of the Week and the team's Jim Santulli 7th Man-award winner.
Ahcan will play in Cleveland under former UW head coach Mike Eaves, who leads the Monsters. Cleveland is the minor league affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Ahcan attended the Pittsburgh Penguins development camp in 2019.
