Boston Blues: Badgers fall 4-2 to Northeastern in NCAA regional final

O’Brien and Pettet score for UW

BOSTON – The fifth-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team saw its 2021-22 season draw to a close on Saturday, falling 4-2 to No. 3 Northeastern at historic Matthews Arena.

Casey O'Brien and Brette Pettet scored for the Badgers (26-8-4), but UW was unable to earn its third-straight win against the Huskies (31-4-2).

The Huskies put up a goal early in the game on a power play to get a 1-0 lead. The Badgers didn't take long to answer and O'Brien lit the lamp five minutes later to make the game even at 1-1. The Huskies then added a second tally with five seconds left in the period to get up 2-1 headed into the second.

Northeastern was able to add another tally in the second period and went into the final frame up 3-1 over Wisconsin.

The Huskies added a fourth on a power play goal halfway through the third to put the game out of reach.

Kennedy Blair made 28 saves in the setback.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On today's game:

"If you watch the game and you analyze the game and now you look back at the game, there were certain points within the game where things changed and could've changed both ways."

On challenges with personnel this season:
"We had challenges but we're no different than any other team. It's an Olympic season, we had four people gone to the national team the whole year and had two of our players in the first six games tear their ACLs. As a coach, you can get frustrated or disappointed but my philosophy is I show up, talk to my (athletic) trainer about who's available for today, for practice and games, and that's what you deal with and that's all you can control."

On the season:
"There was adversity, especially in the second half, but they kept plowing away. You saw today, they fought until the end. Unfortunately we came up a little bit short and the season ends."

On the seniors:
"In a week, in two weeks, as they reflect on their experiences at Wisconsin, they have a lot to be proud of. They took away a lot of things and they left us in a lot better shape than before they came."

Senior forward Brette Pettet
On the game plan:

"I think we just tried to stick to our plan. At the end of the day you're going to face different teams that have different ways of playing and today went in their favor. They got more pucks in the net than we did but that's hockey."

On the outcome:
"We put everything out there that we could. Someone's gotta win at the end of the day and today it wasn't us. I'm not coming back, I'm graduating, but we've got some younger girls that will have another crack at it."
