LINCOLN, Neb. — One of four Badgers taking spots on the podium, Wisconsin's Austin Gomez claimed the 2022 Big Ten title at 149 pounds on Sunday and joined six of his teammates in earning automatic qualifications to the upcoming 2022 NCAA Championships.
Wisconsin finished eighth overall in the team standings with 68.0 points.
Gomez was named Co-Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships with Michigan's Myles Amine. Gomez was also named to the 2022 All-Big Ten Team. He earned an 8-5 decision to upset the No. 1 seed and top-ranked Sammy Sasso (Ohio State) to earn the crown at 149 pounds. Notably, Gomez returned to wrestling only this season after transferring to Wisconsin and had stepped away entirely from the sport due to injury. His title marks the first for the Badgers since Isaac Jordon won a Big Ten Championship at 165 pounds in 2016 and the first won during head coach Chris Bono's tenure.
Dean Hamiti (165 pounds) was also named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year after finishing third overall in his bracket, qualifying for the NCAA Championships and building a 24-2 overall record as a true freshman. He advanced to the third-place match on Sunday with a 10-4 decision over Nebraska's Clayton Wilson before earning his top-three finish with a 4-2 decision in overtime over Ohio State's Carson Karchla (1st seed). Hamiti's only loss was a narrow 3-2 decision to eventual Big Ten Champion Alex Marinelli, an Iowa senior.
At 125 pounds, Eric Barnett finished second overall after a 12-4 major decision loss to Big Ten Champion Nick Suriano (Michigan) in the final. Barnett finished Big Tens with a 3-1 overall record to improve to 16-3 overall and earned an automatic NCAA qualification. He is a returning 2021 NCAA All-American after finishing eighth in the nation last season.
At 157 pounds, Garrett Model earned his first-ever NCAA qualification after finishing seventh overall. Model, a redshirt senior wrestling his final season, defeated Michigan State's Chase Saldate with a 7-0 decision to place and qualify for the national tournament. He finished 2-2 at Big Tens and improves to 15-12 overall this season.
Three other Badgers earned automatic NCAA qualifications after fighthing their way back through the consolation brackets of their weight classes. Chris Weiler finished 12th overall at 184 pounds and earned his second trip to NCAAs as a Badger and fourth career qualification (after transferring from Lehigh). True freshman Braxton Amos (197) pounds finished 10th overall and earned his first career qualificatition to the national tournament. Heavyweight Trent Hillger also earned his fourth-straight qualification to the NCAA Championships after placing ninth overall at 285 pounds.
Three Badgers — Kyle Burwick (133), Joseph Zargo (141) and Andrew McNally (174) — await possible wild-card qualifications this week. It would be Zargo's first career qualification as a true freshman, Burwick's second after earning a trip in 2021 and McNally's fourth qualification after transferring from Kent State to wrestle for the Badgers this season.

Wisconsin's Eric Barnett (125) and Austin Gomez (149) remain undefeated in their respective weight classes and will both wrestle for the 2022 Big Ten titles on Sunday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.
Seeded third at 125, Barnett earned three victories on Saturday including a fall in 3:23 of Maryland's Zach Spence. Barnett clinched his trip to the final after scoring a takedown against Michael DeAugustino (Northwestern) early and then controlling his opponent from on top to secure riding time for the 3-0 decision. Barnett will face top-seed Nick Suriano of Michigan in the final on Sunday.
Seeded second at 149, Gomez clinched his trip to the Big Ten Championship final with a jaw-dropping pin in just 20 seconds against third-seeded Ridge Lovett (Nebraska). Earlier on Saturday, Gomez earned a 12-4 major decision over seventh-seeded Beau Bartlett (Penn State) to advance to the semis. Gomez will face top-seed Sammy Sasso of Ohio State in the final on Sunday.
True freshman Dean Hamiti advanced to the semifinals after winning his first two matches with tech falls in the 165-pound bracket, but lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Iowa senior Alex Marinelli. Hamiti will wrestle Nebraska's Clayton Wilson to determine who advances to the third-place match on Sunday.
Senior Garrett Model fought his way into Sunday's seventh-place match and will face Michigan State's Chase Saldate to earn a spot on the podium. Model collected a pin in 3:16 against Ohio State's Bryce Hepner on Saturday.
Although out of contention for the podium, five Badgers - Kyle Burwick (133), Andrew McNally (174), Chris Weiler (184), Braxton Amos (197) and Trent Hillger (285) - are still in competition within the ninth-place brackets of their respective weight classes and need to battle to earn NCAA automatic qualifications or be considered for a possible wild-card qualification (see NCAA allocation announcement here).
