Five events to watch: Badgers compete at NCAA Indoor Championships

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's and women's track and field teams wrap up the indoor season by sending eight athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama on Friday-Saturday. Events begin on Friday at 3 p.m. while events on Saturday start at 12:30 p.m.

Here are five events to watch this weekend.

1. COUNTING DOWN 15 LAPS: Redshirt senior Olin Hacker competes in the 3,000 meters after winning the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago. Hacker goes into the event ranked 15th with a personal best time of 7 minutes, 45.73 seconds, ranking him second all-time for UW. The 3,000-meter final takes place on Saturday at 5 p.m.

2. SIX-SECOND RACE: Junior Lawrence Johnson will compete in the 60 meters after recently placing second at the Big Ten meet. Johnson is seeded 14th going into the prelims and sits as second all-time for Wisconsin with a personal best time of 6.61. The 60-meter preliminaries take place on Friday at 4:15 p.m. with the top-eight finishers advancing to Saturday's final at 4:10 p.m.

3. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS-PART 1: Women's shot put school record holder Josie Schaefer is competing in her third NCAA championship after placing second at the Big Ten Championships. Schaefer goes into the event ranked fourth, after setting a new school record with a personal best distance of 59 feet, 6 1/4 inches. The shot put begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

4. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS-PART 2: Junior Andrew Stone goes into the shot put ranked 12th. Stone is coming off a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten meet. His distance of 65-0 ½ places him as second all-time for UW, just seven inches behind the school record. The men's shot put takes place at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

5. WISCONSIN'S BEST RELAY: The quartet of Adam Spencer, Colin Enz, Abdullahi Hassan, and Jackson Sharp represent the Badger men in the distance medley relay (1200-400-800-1600) after setting the new school record of 9:23.85 on Feb. 19. The relay, which enters the event as the ninth seed, runs on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
