Badgers get three more competitive races under their belt

BOSTON - The Wisconsin men's rowing team traveled east to compete against No. 14 Boston University on Saturday on the Charles River. The Badgers fell to the Terriers, but put up fast, competitive times across the board.

The varsity eight kicked off the morning for the Badgers, finishing less than a second behind the Terriers and crossing the line in 5 minutes, 55 seconds. The Badgers led the race until the last 50 meters, but the Terriers finished through the line in 5:54.60.

The second varsity eight boat battled against Boston's highest-ranked boat and finished through the line in 6:07.20. The Terriers edged the Badgers by only a few seconds to finish in 6:01.80.

The third varsity eight, composed of six freshmen with four novices, had a strong race, finishing in 6:06.00. The Terriers finished in 6:04.30.

Up next: The Badgers will stay in Boston another day to compete against No. 8 Northeastern on Sunday.

Head Coach Chris Clark on the varsity eight race

"Started out with the one varsity… very similar to the race we had against Stanford. We had more base speed than either one of those teams. That means in the middle of the race we move out fairly easily. The problem is we're not experienced enough or slick enough to finish it off. We led that race until about 50 meters to go. They have a lot of really good, experienced internationals in that BU boat. They popped ahead of us and won my four-tenths of a second. We've been working on it, but haven't gotten it down yet. Guys are disappointed. A little cleaner and they would have won this race."

On the second varsity eight
"I knew that BU's second varsity was their highest ranked boat of their one, two or three. I knew they would be good and they were. I was extremely happy with our guys how two or three years ago we would've lost this race by 10, 12, 13 seconds, but these guys give no quarter. I think it was something under six seconds. That was good. They fought well, they just got to clean it up."

On the third varsity eight
"In the 3V, that has six freshmen in it and four of whom are novices. It is kind of the old school Wisconsin. They have learned to row here in the last six months. We just weren't aggressive enough in the first 500. We were on them the whole time and we exploded with about 150 meters to go, but came up short. I think had we started early we may have had a chance. It ended up being a very lose race."

"This will be the first time in years that we are actually developing freshmen in the proper manner which is starting as freshmen, getting a lot of actual big-time races."

On tomorrow's race
"Tomorrow is Northeastern in the 1V and they're ranked even higher than BU. Frankly, their results have shown that they are significantly better than we are so let's hope we can step it up against them."
