EUGENE, Ore. -- In 1985, Tim Hacker won the NCAA Cross Country Championship for Wisconsin. On Friday, his son, Olin, won his first NCAA title, claiming the 5,000-meter title at the outdoor national championships.
Hacker took the lead with 80 meters to go, crossing the line in 13 minutes, 27.73 seconds for the win.
"It means everything to have won this race," said
Olin Hacker. "Talking to Mick (Byrne) beforehand, (he said) you just copy the moves and stay in it and you put yourself in a position to win, and I did that.
"Just to win was so unbelievable; I'm still in shock but it means so much. This program has given me so much. It's just the fairytale ending that I knew was a possibility and I knew this could be an amazing day. It's just unreal to me."
As a team, the Badgers tied for 25th with 11 points. Florida won the team title with 44 points.
Hacker was in third place with two laps to go. with 700 meters left, Michigan State's Morgan Beadlescomb moved into the lead. With one lap remaining, only four athletes were still in contention for the title with Beadlescomb and Hacker sitting 1-2. Coming down the home stretch, Hacker moved past the Spartan for the win. Beadlescomb finished second in 13:28.38.
Spencer wraps up rookie season
In the only other final for the Badgers, freshman
Adam Spencer wrapped up a phenomenal rookie season, placing eighth in the 1500 meters to earn first-team All-America honors.
Other competitors
In Wednesday's competition, sophomore
Bob Liking finished 22nd in the 10,000 meters in 29:02.46.
Two other Badgers also competed on Wednesday as junior
Lawrence Johnson placed 11th in the 200 meters in 20.41, earning second-team All-America honors. Johnson also finished 19th in the 100 meters in 10.28. Sophomore
Abdullahi Hassan took 19th in the 800 meters in 1:48.49.
Of Note
- Olin Hacker becomes the 30th NCAA track champion for the Badgers.
- The Badgers recorded the 48th top-25 finish at the NCAA Outdoor championships.
- Wisconsin was the second Big Ten team in the team standings behind Minnesota, which tied for 18th with 13 points.
