Incoming frosh youngest player named to squad
EDMONTON, Alberta – Incoming freshman forward Charlie Stramel made the final 25-man roster for the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team that is competing at the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship. The Edmonton event runs Aug. 9-20.
The Americans are defending tourney champions from 2021 when Badgers Cole Caufield and Alex Turcotte helped the squad to gold. Dylan Holloway won silver at the event with Canada.
UW equipment manager Nate LaPoint helped the U.S. team for the 2021 title run and is back again reprising his role.
The 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship was originally scheduled for last December, but was canceled due to COVID spread among the athletes.
Stramel, a potential first round pick for the 2023 NHL Draft, helps extend the streak to six consecutive years with at least one Badger competing at the World Juniors and the 35th straight event with at least one Badger competitor or staff member taking part in the tournament dating back to 1988.
That includes in 2004, when Team USA won its first gold medal and Badgers Jake Dowell, Jeff Likens and Ryan Suter all skated for the team. That team was also coached by Badger alum Mike Eaves, who was UW head coach at the time.
Team USA boasts five gold medals in the tournament, and three of those victories saw Badgers lead the team as captain (Luke Kunin – 2017; Jake McCabe – 2013; Derek Stepan – 2010).
USA Hockey Notes: The United States enters the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship having earned medals in five of the last six tournaments, including most recently winning its fifth gold medal in 2021 in Edmonton, Alberta. To date, the U.S. National Junior Team has claimed 13 medals, including five gold (2021, 2017, 2013, 2010, 2004), two silver (2019, 1997) and six bronze (2018, 2016, 2011, 2007, 1992, 1986).
