Men’s soccer visits East Lansing to take on Michigan State
MADISON, Wis. – On Sunday, Wisconsin takes on Michigan State in a Big Ten clash away from home.
Here are five things to know
1. LOOKING BACK: Wisconsin and Michigan State have squared off 44 times, with the Badgers leading with an all-time record of 23-13-8. The last time these two sides played each other was on September 17, 2021 in a 2OT thriller that ended in a 1-1 draw. The men's team last won against MSU on Sept. 20, 2018 in East Lansing by a score of 1-0.
2. PLAYERS TO WATCH: Senior Aron Saevarsson has shown his adaptability by sliding around the midfield the past couple games. The Iceland native towers over most opponents at 6-5' and yet is still one of the quickest players on the pitch, especially when he is on the ball. Saevarsson has one goal and three assists through eight games so far.
For the Spartans, junior forward Greyson Mercer has three goals and two assists in nine games played so far this season (458 minutes). The forward has bagged three goals in his past four games, most recently scoring in back-to-back games against Indiana and Michigan.
3. BIG TEN STANDINGS: The boys are seeking their first conference win of the year on Sunday after a late loss at Penn State and some adversity against Rutgers. The Badgers are a quarter of the way through their Big Ten schedule (6 games remaining) and have plenty of time to change their position in the standings. Northwestern currently sits at the bottom of the table at 0-3 and Maryland is at the top with a record of 2-0-1.
4. RECAPPING THE WEEK: The Badgers battled the Northern Illinois Huskies to a draw on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup. Wisconsin had the better chances throughout the game but were not able to put one away. However, a positive takeaway is that the team was able to keep a clean sheet for the first time since playing against UAB on September 9.
5. HOW TO FOLLOW: The game against MSU (3-4-2) can be streamed on BTN+. Fans can also follow along via live stats.
