Canada captures second-straight gold medal while five Badgers earn silver with the U.S.
HERNING, Denmark - Six former Wisconsin women's hockey players led Hockey Canada to gold at the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship thanks to a 2-1 victory over the U.S. in the gold medal game on Sunday.
UW standout Abby Roque scored the American's lone goal in the gold medal game, her fifth goal of the tournament, but 2017 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner Ann-Renee Desbiens made several key stops down the stretch to lead the Canadians to their third gold medal in the last 12 months.
Joining Desbiens on the winning Canadian squad were UW alums Kristen Campbell, Emily Clark, Meaghan Mikkelson, Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull. Turnbull had five points during the tournament, which ranked seventh among Canadian skaters.
Five Badgers earned silver with the U.S. as current Badgers Jesse Compher, Lacey Eden, Caroline Harvey, joined UW alums Hilary Knight and Roque on the American squad. Knight ranked in the top-10 in tournament scoring with nine points while Roque and Harvey were tied for 13th with eight points. Harvey, an incoming UW freshman, was named to the all-media team for the tournament.
Knight, who will be inducted into the UW Hall of Fame later this week, made history during the tournament, becoming the all-time points leader in IIHF Women's Worlds history as UW's all-time career points getter ended her 12th world championship with 89 points.
UW Hall of Famer Carla Macleod, in her first tournament as head coach of Czechia, led the Czechs to their first-ever medal at the world tournament. Czechia defeated Switzerland, 4-2, on Sunday in the bronze medal match. Currently the bench boss at the University of Calgary, Macleod led UW to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 2005 and was a two-time All-American for the Badgers.
The Badgers open their 2022-23 season on the road at Penn State on Sept. 22-23 before returning to LaBahn Arena for their home opener against Lindenwood on Sept. 29 and 30.
