Badgers drop match against Rutgers on the road

UW unable to overcome 2-1 deficit in second half

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Wisconsin men's soccer fell to 4-4-5 (1-2-3 Big Ten) after a loss at Rutgers on Friday. Despite their best efforts, the Badgers were unable to make up the 2-1 deficit they faced in the last 20 minutes of the match.

How It Happened:
The only score of the first half came from Rutgers, when midfielder Jackson Temple found the ball off a throw-in and scored against Nate Crockford in the 21st minute of the game.

The Badgers rebounded at the start of the second half, however, when the they pulled off a tremendous passing sequence three minutes in. It started with an entry pass from Tim Bielic to Markie Hrvojevic in the Rutgers' box. Hrvojevic then delivered a beautiful back-heel touch pass to Thomas Raimbault, who worked around his defender to tie the game up at one apiece.

Play went back and forth through much of the second half, with Wisconsin seemingly taking the lead in the 55th minute on a Hrvojevic goal, but it was waved off due to an offsides call.

Rutgers went back on top in the 70th minute. Nate Crockford came out of the net to defend a Rutgers' rush, saving the first shot attempt, but Rutgers found the rebound and put the ball in the net on a shot that hit the crossbar.

Wisconsin's last shots on goal, and chance to comeback, came from Birgir Baldvinsson and Thomas Raimbault, but the Scarlett Knights' keeper Ciaran Dalton managed to save them both.

Key Notes:
  • Thomas Raimbault scored the lone goal for Wisconsin, his second of the season. He picked up an assist last match against Bradley. He now has five points in his last four games.
  • Birgir Baldvinsson had a strong outing on both sides of the ball. He created many high danger attempts on offense, registering three shots, and contained many attacks from Rutgers on his side of the field.
  • Markie Hrvojevic pulled off one of the best passes of the season on his assist to Thomas Raimbault, hitting it with the back of his heel for a no-look pass into the middle of the field. Hrvojevic also had a potential goal as well but it was called just offsides. The forward has three points in his last four games.
