MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team (12-3-4) were victorious against Rutgers (9-6-4) on Sunday night in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
The Badgers were the No. 3 seed, while the Scarlet Knights were the No. 6 seed. Wisconsin won 4-1 on penalty kicks after overtime ended 0-0.
How it happened
The Badgers' post-season campaign commenced against Rutgers at home on Sunday after the team claimed the No. 3 spot in the Big Ten Tournament.
It was a cold one at the McClimon Soccer Complex, with temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
It was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. However, the Badgers created most of the chances throughout the match. In the first two halves, Wisconsin outshot Rutgers 23-6.
However, at the end of 90 minutes, the game remained level at 0-0. As a result, the match proceeded to overtime, which was two 10-minute periods.
Wisconsin once again was knocking on the door, searching for the opening goal. Throughout the match, Rutgers' main opportunities came from counter-attacking play, which Wisconsin managed to fend off.
Since the score remained 0-0 after overtime, the match headed to penalty kicks.
Aryssa Mahrt stepped up first and calmly buried the ball into the bottom right corner.
Rutgers' first taker proceeded to hit the ball towards the bottom right next, but Erin McKinney managed a fantastic save.
Emma Jaskaniec proceeded to score her kick, while McKinney came up clutch once again to stop the next Rutgers' kicker. The shot was heading toward the high right side of the goal, with McKinney managing to get a hand to it .
Hailey Baumann sunk her shot to the back of the net to bring the badgers to 3-0. The Scarlet Kights snuck one past McKinney to put one on the board.
Ashley Martinez capitalized on the goal to give the team the 4-1 PK advantage, allowing the team to continue its campaign.

The No. 3 Badgers head to Columbus, Ohio for the semi-finals of the Big Ten Tournament. The team will face No. 2 seed Nebraska on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m. (CT).
