Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Late flurry lifts No. 1 Badgers past No. 11 Huskies

UW scores three times in final five minutes to earn 5-2 win at SCSU

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team scored three times in the final four minutes to surge past No. 11 St. Cloud State, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Laila Edwards scored twice for the Badgers (12-0-0-, 8-0-0-0 WCHA) while Maddi Wheeler, Casey O'Brien and Sarah Wozniewicz also added tallies to complete the sweep of the Huskies (9-3-0, 4-2-0 WCHA).

Edwards slid in a rebound from Cassie Hall to give the Badgers an early lead, but the Huskies were able to tie things up on the power play.

Just 1:58 into the second period, a snipe to the top of the goal from Wheeler gave Wisconsin the edge over St. Cloud.

SCSU tallied a goal late in the second period to make it even, headed into the final frame.

O'Brien came up clutch for the Badgers in the third period, scoring her 16th career game-winning goal. The power-play goal gave UW a 3-2 lead with just under four minutes remaining.

Edwards scored her second of the day minutes later, an empty-net effort, before Sarah Wozniewicz put the game out of reach with another empty-net goal for the Badgers.

Three Notes of the Game

-Ava McNaughton stopped 21 of the shots she faced for her sixth win of the season.

Sophomore Laila Edwards
On how she felt the team played today:

"We got the job done. We faced some adversity and were able to come out the other side. It was definitely one of our toughest battles this year and I thought it was very impressive how we were able to battle back."

On skating for Team USA in the Rivalry Series next weekend:
"I am very humbled and grateful. I am glad that my teammates and coaches here have prepared me and instilled confidence in me to hopefully play my best hockey there."

Senior Casey O'Brien
On why the power play is working well this year:

"I think one of the biggest things is that we're just moving the puck and no one is holding on to it for too long. We also don't have that many set plays and Jackie is letting us play with our creativity. We're all switching positions and moving the puck really quickly and it's just a matter of time when we're out there before we put one in."

On how the season is going so far:
"I think things are great. We've been in a number of different situations, we've been down and we've been tied, and we have always come out with a win and so I think that puts us in a really good position moving forward."

Up Next: UW will enjoy its first bye week of the year next week before heading to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 17-18. Puck drop on Friday, Nov. 17 is set for 5 p.m. CT and the series finale on Saturday, Nov. 18 is set for 2 p.m.
