Model, Calhoun and Empey undefeated at UWSP wrestling tournament
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Six Wisconsin wrestlers traveled north to compete in the 2023 Pointer Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Skyward Fieldhouse on Saturday. Badgers Gavin Model, Graham Calhoun and Brooks Empey finished first in their respective weight classes.
Model, a redshirt sophomore from Stoughton, Wis., earned three bonus-point victories in his undefeated run to the 157-pound title, including a pin in 51 seconds of Jesse Herrera (North Central).
Calhoun, a redshirt sophomore from Plymouth, Indiana, secured two tech fall wins to open his tournament. He won the 165-pound title with a 8-4 decision over Bryce McDonough (Luther College).
A fellow Stoughton native, Empey led the Badgers on Saturday with two pins and a tech fall victory in his 5-0 run to the heavyweight title. He claimed the top spot on the podium with a 4-2 decision over Jason Guadarrama (Wisconsin-Parkside).
Teammate Cody Goebel, a redshirt freshman also competing at 157, placed third overall with 5-1 record. He had four impressive bonus-point wins including two pins and two major decisions. He defeated Zaren Anderson (Carthage College) in 3:40 to win by fall for the bronze match, particularly satisfying as Zaren initially defeated Goebel in the quarterfinals to send him into consolations.
Danny Sheen, a redshirt freshman, finished 5-2 overall and placed fourth at 149 pounds. He had three bonus-point victories, including two tech falls.
Graduate transfer Isaac Klarkowski competed in his first wrestling competition since high school and opened with a pin in 3:51 of Jordan Loose (Itasca). Klarkowski, who played Division I football at Rice for the past four years, finished 1-2 overall in his return to wrestling.
