Badgers fall to Hawkeyes in Big Ten Championship

Hard fought match results in 1-0 loss

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Wisconsin women's soccer team (13-4-4) faced Iowa (12-4-4) in the Big Ten Championship on Sunday. The game saw the No. 8 seed Hawkeyes come away with the 1-0 win over the No. 3 seed Badgers.

How it happened
It was familiar territory for both teams, who faced each other in both the 2014 and 2021 Big Ten Tournament Championships. In 2021, the Badgers lost 1-0 but beat the Hawkeyes in 2014 after a goal in overtime sealed the 1-0 win.

It was the Hawkeyes who got on the scoreboard first in Columbus. Iowa was awarded a penalty kick in the 18th minute, which Josie Durr converted.

Not long after, the Badgers appeared to win a penalty kick of their own after an Iowa hand ball in the box, but after reviewing it the officials decided to overturn the call.

Maddie Ishaug had the best opportunity of the first half, hitting the cross bar with just over a minute left. The score at the half was 1-0 in favor of Iowa. Despite dominating offensively, the Badgers faced an uphill battle in the second half.

Opening the second half, head coach Paula Wilkins opted for a tactical change. The Badgers moved to three defenders instead of four, taking a more offensive minded approach. Senior Dara Andringa subbed into the midfield, allowing both Ashley Martinez and Ishaug to sit higher up the field.

The change was a good one since the Badgers sat in the Hawkeyes' half for much of the rest of the match. However, Wisconsin was not able to get one back and the score ended 1-0.

The Iowa penalty kick from the first half proved to be the decider, with it being the only shot on goal the Hawkeyes managed all game. The Badgers out shot the Hawkeyes 8-1.

Aryssa Mahrt and Emma Jaskaniec earned spots on the all-tournament team. Jaskaniec also earned Offensive Player of the Tournament.
