Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 2 Badgers fall to No. 6 Bulldogs, 3-2

UW splits home series with UMD

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team fell to No. 6 Minnesota Duluth in a 3-2 heartbreaker on Sunday afternoon at LaBahn Arena.

Cassie Hall and Casey O'Brien each found the back of the net, but the Badgers (13-3-0, 8-3-0-0-1-0 WCHA) were unable to complete a comeback against the Bulldogs (10-5-1, 7-5-0-0-0-0 WCHA).

After two scoreless periods, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead early in the final frame before adding on another just three minutes later.

Hall answered to get the Badgers on the board, but UMD followed up shortly after to make it 3-1.

With just three seconds to go in the game, O'Brien connected on a stellar pass from Curl to make it a 3-2 contest.

Ava McNaughton stopped 23 of the shots she faced.

Three Notes of the Game
- The Badgers enjoyed their eighth sellout of the season on Sunday.
- Wisconsin outshot UMD 44 to 26.
- Curl recorded her 150th career point, becoming the 14th player in program history to reach that milestone.

Head Coach Mark Johnson
On his general takeaways:

"It's a game we could have easily won, but sometimes the game doesn't pan out the way you'd like it to pan out because of different reasons. One was certainly the power play, we didn't capitalize on it."

Senior Casey O'Brien
On takeaways from Sunday's game:

"I thought for the majority, we played a really good game. We had a lot of good chances, tons of shots. But I think we did have some lows that led to turnovers led to their goals. We're just going to use this as a learning opportunity moving forward. Let it hurt for a little bit. But we're going to forget about it and move on."

Sophomore Caroline Harvey
On moving forward from Sunday's loss:

"I'm still really proud of our team for finishing the way we did. It adds some more motivation more than anything. We know it's going to be a tough couple games up in Minnesota, we know what to expect. We just had a great opponent to get us ready for that, so we're looking forward to those games already."

Up Next: The Badgers wrap up the 2023 calendar year with a trip to the Twin Cities to take on No. 3 Minnesota at Ridder Arena. Puck drop on Friday is set for 6 p.m. while the series will wrap up on Saturday at 2 p.m.
