Sprinters travel to New Mexico; throwers at Ripon College

MADISON, Wis. – The 24th-ranked Wisconsin women's track and field team has select athletes competing at two meets this weekend. Select sprinters head to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday and Saturday. Events start at 2:30 p.m. CT Friday and 10:30 a.m. CT on Saturday. The Badgers throwers stay close to home as they head to Ripon, Wisconsin, on Saturday for the Red Hawk Invitational. Events begin at 11 a.m.

Here are five events to watch this weekend.

1. SPEEDY BADGERS: UW sends Destiny Huven and Kiley Robbins to Albuquerque this weekend. The two sprinters last competed at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Jan. 21, both having impressive finishes in their respective events. Huven finished fifth in the Pro 60-meter hurdles, breaking her own school record in the event, running 8.14 in the semifinals and final. That time leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally this season. Robbins placed second in the 60-meter dash in 7.45, which was the debut of her signature event this season.

2. DON'T WEIGH ME DOWN: Redshirt junior Chloe Lindeman will be back competing in the weight throw, coming off a first-place finish in the event last weekend. She set the school record at 74 feet, 7 inches in mid-January. Her mark ranks second in the Big Ten and ranks second nationally. She will be joined by fellow Badgers Olivia Roberts, who has a personal best of 71-5 1/4, which ranks fourth in the conference. Redshirt freshmen Abby Peeler and Asia Rave rank eighth and ninth, respectively, in the Big Ten at 64-0 1/4 and 63-5 1/2.

3. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS: Wisconsin's shot putters also compete at Ripon. Grad student Josie Schaefer ranks second in the Big Ten with a season-best throw of 58-8 while redshirt freshman Danni Langseth is 16th at 50-2 1/2.

4. BADGERS IN THE RANKINGS: Wisconsin is ranked 24th nationally and fourth in the Great Lakes Regional, according to the USTFCCCA rankings, released Jan. 30. Among Big Ten teams, the Badgers trail No. 20 Nebraska in the national rankings while Ohio State is ranked 25th. In the region, UW trails Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana, respectively.
