Badgers take down No. 10 Penn State

McClellan ties career-high with 47 saves in regular-season finale

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — An outstanding performance from junior goaltender Kyle McClellan helped lift the Badgers past No. 10 Penn State (20-13-1, 10-13-1 0-3-0 Big Ten) on Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena.

Goals from sophomore defenseman Corson Ceulemans and junior forward Mathieu De St. Phalle powered Wisconsin's 2-1 win in its final regular season matchup.

The Badgers capitalized on a power-play opportunity in the first period for the game's first tally. Caufield cycled the puck up to De St. Phalle as he transitioned into the slot. De St. Phalle passed to Bantle on the side of the net who set up Corson Ceulemans on the backdoor for a one-time shot.

Penn State tied the game at one even midway through the second period. Christian Berger passed the puck to Kevin Wall as he skated into the defensive zone to regroup behind the net before leading a rush up the ice. He drove deep into the Badgers' zone and slated a pass across for Connor McMenamin to tap in the backdoor.

The Badgers and Penn State went into the final frame tied at 1-1.

De St. Phalle gave the Badgers the lead at 6:19 in the third period. Zach Urdahl battled for the puck along the boards in Penn State's zone. He whacked a pass down to De St. Phalle in the corner, who skated the puck to the net and lined up a shot short side to put the Badgers up, 2-1.

Wisconsin successfully killed off a five minute major penalty in the third period, as well as three minutes of major penalty overlapping the second and third periods.

Penn State pulled their goaltender with under three minutes remaining for a shot at the equalizer, but were unsuccessful. McClellan stood tall in net for the Badgers, stopping all 22 shots he faced in the third period to finish the victory.

Notes to know:
  • Kyle McClellan's 47 saves ties his career high
  • Mathieu De St. Phalle scored his second game-winning goal of the season
  • The victory over Penn State gave UW one win against each Big Ten opponent.
Next Up: Wisconsin visits No. 2-seed Michigan for a best-of-three series in the first round of the Big Ten tournament beginning on Friday, March 3.
