Novice eight leads the way with bronze medal
INDIANAPOLIS – The Wisconsin women's openweight rowing program finished the 2023 Big Ten Rowing Championships with a sixth-place team finish at Eagle Creek Park on Sunday.
UW's novice eight raced best compared to its Big Ten competition with a third-place finish in its race. Ohio State captured the event title in 6:47.566, with Michigan second in 6:48.712 and the Badgers third in 6:58.768.
UW's second novice eight finished just out of the medals in fourth place, under three-tenths of a second behind third-place Indiana.
UW's top boat in the varsity races proved to be the second varsity eight, which took fifth place.
Overall, Michigan captured the team title and the automatic NCAA championships bid with 174 points. The Badgers placed sixth with 75 team points.
In addition, a trio of Badgers were honored by the Big Ten. Senior Katherine Breen earned 2023 First Team All-Big Ten honors, while senior Susie Bruce earned second-team honors. Sophia Henshue was also named UW's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

Head Coach Bebe Bryans
"We were really pleased with the performances today. We were hoping to finish a little bit higher, but we were up against teams that were just a little bit better than we were. Looking at the seedings, we were able to be at or better than our seed in everything except for one race. We got our first novice eight back on the podium. Good to see an eight back up there."
On the staff
"I want to thank my staff, as always, for being so confident, so kind and so good with the athletes. Super shout out to Monica Whitehouse for coaching up those freshmen. It's a big task with a lot of people and she's a warrior, just like her women."
