MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's soccer team continues its string of conference games with its contest against Maryland on Sunday, Sept. 24, starting at noon. The game is the first in a men's and women's soccer double header, which serve as the Power of Us games, a celebration of diversity inside Wisconsin Athletics.
Here's what you need to know before the game.
1 – Beat the Best – After battling back from a 2-0 deficit to tie No. 13 Northwestern, the Badgers remain unbeaten on the season against ranked opponents. A win against No. 2 Kentucky, and ties with No. 23 Indiana and the Wildcats brings UW's record against ranked opponents to 1-0-2. According to RPI data, the Badgers have the third hardest strength of schedule nationally.
2 – Birgir Comes up Big – Senior Birgir Baldvinsson scored his first career goal last match, burying a header for the Badger's first goal of the game. The defender from Iceland has started all eight games this season and has played the most minutes of any non-keeper on the team.
Â
3 – Tim's Time – Tim Bielic provided the late game dramatics for UW, tying Northwestern in the 87th minute last match with a goal from outside the box. Looking ahead, Bielic has played Maryland three times in his Badger career, tallying an assist in last season's 2-2 draw against the Terrapins.
Â
4 –Terrapin Scouting – Maryland was ranked the last two matches that Wisconsin played against them, but that streak will end on Sunday as the Terrapins are off to just a 1-3-2 (0-1-1) record. UW is 3-8-2 all-time against Maryland, but is 3-1-2 in their last five matchups. Forward Kimani Stewart-Baynes has scored or assisted on four of Maryland's five goals this season and is an early candidate for the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
5 – Power of Us – This Sunday's doubleheader will serve as both the men's and women's Power of Us games. Power of Us is Wisconsin Athletics' campaign to celebrate diversity and inclusion.. These games give our student athletes a platform to share their stories. The first 500 fans on Sunday will receive a Power of Us scarf!
