Badgers start season at Head of Oklahoma
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's lightweight rowing team gets the season started this weekend at the Head of the Oklahoma on Saturday, September 30 and Sunday, October 1.Â
Before the Badgers hit the water, here are f(oar) things to know:
1. INTENSITY: The name of the game this season is intensity for the lightweights at UW. Coach Hadzo Habibovic said, "We have had a huge emphasis on improving our rowing mechanics in the last two years and I think the team has gotten to a point now where they are rowing well enough to be able to take this step with our training plan." Their focus and emphasis on training this season is going to push the pace each day, and the team is ready for this next step.Â
2. TRUST THE PROCESS: The team's goal is: "Continue to trust the process and be great," said Coach Hodge. The team has been putting in the work for the last two years and laying a great foundation for the program, and now it is time for a breakout year. Coach added, "We don't like to make our goals outcome based, but obviously we want to do everything we can to win."
3. PATH TO SUCCESS: With 18 new freshmen on the team, from all over the country, and the talent returning from last year, the team has great strength in numbers. Coach said, "I feel like our leadership contingent is the strongest it's ever been in my time at Wisconsin and I'm really excited to see all of the pieces come together to see what kind of speed we can produce as a team this year.
4. STARTING STRONG: The Badgers have been working hard in practice and have been extremely focused and intentional with their training as they prepared for the upcoming races in Oklahoma. The upperclassmen have taken the freshmen under their wing, and shown them what everything is all about. "It's been awesome to see this early in the season and I am really looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish in the coming year," explained Coach Hodge.
