Swimmers compete at Texas Invite and divers at Georgia Invite
MADISON, Wis. — The Badgers will return to action this weekend as the swimmers head to the Texas Invite and the divers travel to the Georgia Invite from Wednesday-Friday. Swimming prelims will begin at 10 AM and finals are set for 6 PM for each day of competition, while diving prelims will begin at 9:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
Before the Badgers dive in, here are five things to know:
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers are coming off a huge dual meet win against Minnesota. In the Border Battle, Wisconsin set the attendance record at Soderholm with 968 people packing the pool. The women took down the Gophers 201-99 as they won every event and set a new school record in the 200 medley relay. Maggie Wanezek, Hazal Ozkan, Phoebe Bacon and Hailey Tierney finished in a time of 1:35.60. The men got the edge over Minnesota 158-142 as they won the final event, the 400 free relay.
2. MOVING ON UP:Â The men were previously ranked No. 23 and skyrocketed up to No. 14 after the win against No. 18 Minnesota. The women broke into the top 10 after a clean sweep of Minnesota. Previously ranked No. 15, the women jumped up to No. 10.
3. B1G HONORS: The women have racked up three Big Ten weekly awards so far this season. Phoebe Bacon earned swimmer of the week after the triple dual meet against Michigan and Notre Dame as she recorded three NCAA "B" cuts in the 200 back, 200 IM and 200 fly. Freshman Maggie Wanezek clinched freshman of the week after the Minnesota meet, earning four first place finishes and three NCAA "B" cuts in the 100 back, 200 back and 400 free relay. Sophomore Hailey Tierney was named swimmer of the week that same week, with NCAA "B" cuts in 50 free, 100 free and 400 free relay.
4. FALL FINALE: This marks the Badgers' final meet before the break. They will return to the pool on Jan. 4 in California to take on UC San Diego, UCLA and UNLV. Looking ahead, the Badgers will host two more home meets this season. UW will welcome Northwestern on Jan. 18 and is set to host the Badger Invitational on Feb 7-Feb 8.
