John Tonje garners second-straight Big Ten weekly honor

Graduate student named Big Ten Player of the Week

MADISON, Wis. — John Tonje garnered another Big Ten weekly honor on Monday, recognized as Big Ten Player of the Week for the second-straight week after leading the No. 15 Wisconsin men's basketball team to a 3-0 week and the 2024 Greenbrier Tip-Off tournament title.

The graduate transfer from North Omaha, Nebraska, led the Badgers to a home win against UTRGV, as well as a pair of wins over the weekend versus UCF and Pitt at the Greenbrier Tip-Off in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Tonje was named MVP of the Greenbrier Tip-Off after putting up another 30-point performance against Pitt on Sunday in the Greenbrier Tip-Off championship game, finishing with 33 points and seven rebounds. In two games at The Greenbrier, Tonje averaged 24.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Tonje's performance on Sunday was notable:
  • Tonje became the eighth Badger to post multiple 30-point games in a season since the 2005-06 season.
  • Tonje became the first Badger with 3 games of 10+ made free throw since Brad Davison 2017-18.
  • Including Sunday's 10-for-10 effort, Tonje is now shooting 60-for-63 (95.2%) from the line. That mark leads the NCAA among players with more than 30 FTAs.
  • First Division I player to score 33 or more against two high major opponents in the month of November over the last 15 years.
For the week, he averaged 22.3 points per game on 52.6 percent shooting from the field, including going 23-for-24 (95.8%) at the free throw line.

Also named Big Ten Player of the Week on Nov. 18, Tonje is the first Badger to earn the distinction multiple times since Johnny Davis in 2022. Davis received the honor three times that season and was named Big Ten Player of the Year.

Tonje ranks second in the Big Ten this season averaging a team-leading 23.0 points per game, to go along with 5.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest.

No. 15 Wisconsin hosts Chicago State on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
