Boltz scores, Michigan equalizes late as Badgers narrowly miss Big Ten tournament
MADISON, Wis. – A Michigan goal with 42 seconds left on the clock forced a 1-1 tie and caused heartbreak for Wisconsin men's soccer (7-5-3, 2-5-3 Big Ten), who narrowly missed a Big Ten tournament berth on Sunday at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
How it happened
The Badgers took early command of the game, and 20 minutes in, they were leading the Wolverines (7-3-6, 2-3-5 Big Ten), 2-0 in shots. Their efforts paid off in the 33rd minute when Dean Boltz scored his 10th goal of the season. Robert Burlew threaded the ball through a tight defensive lattice in the penalty area and Boltz got his foot on it to send it into the back of the Wolverine net.
The Badgers added one more shot in the first half and led Michigan 3-0 in shots on goal at the half.
Wisconsin set up defensively in the second half and only allowed two shots on goal until the 90th minute, when the Wolverines equalized the score at 1-1. Needing a win to punch their ticket into the Big Ten tournament, the Badgers set all 11 forward but failed to find the game-winner in the remaining 40 seconds.
