Badgers take seven of 10 bouts
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin Badgers took down the Northwestern Wildcats 30-12, taking seven of 10 bouts Friday night in the UW Field House.
No. 2 Eric Barnett (19-2) once again got the night started for Wisconsin, securing the major decision win over Northwestern's Massey Odiotti. Barnett secured two takedowns and two near falls, including a four-pointer.
Redshirt freshman Nicolar Rivera and No. 22 Joseph Zargo kept the Badgers hot streak going. Rivera won in a dominant 13-4 major decision win and Zargo won by decision 4-1 in a hard-fought battle.
True freshman Zan Fugitt made his Big Ten dual debut and secured his first collegiate dual win, taking down Kolby McClain by major decision. He secured a takedown in each period.
No. 5 Dean Hamiti took on No. 22 Maxx Mayfield. Hamiti secured two early takedowns in the first period, however the match ended early due to an injury to Mayfield at the 0:51 mark and gave Hamiti the 6-0 decision by injury default.
Transfers Max Maylor and Shane Liegel continue to impress. No. 12 Maylor pinned his opponent at the 1:53 mark. No. 16 Liegel battled No. 33 Troy Fisher, ultimately securing the 4-2 decision win.
Redshirt freshman Cody Goebel made his NCAA and Big Ten dual debut Friday night. Goebel took on the 18th-ranked wrestler in the 157-pound weight class, Trevor Chumbley. Goebel battled until the end, securing five escapes but lost by tech fall at the 6:01 mark.
Wisconsin continues Big Ten action this Sunday, as they will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on unranked Purdue. Viewers can tune in on B1G+.
