PARIS - Former Wisconsin women's soccer standout Rose Lavelle helped the U.S. women's soccer team claim gold at the 2024 Summer Olympics after going undefeated in France. The USA has now earned a record-setting five gold medals, and the program's first since 2012.Â
Lavelle is the ninth different Badger to win gold at the Summer Olympics and the first to do so since Gwen Jorgensen and Cierra Runge each captured gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics.Â
A Cincinnati, Ohio native, Lavelle, secured eight looks on goal, with three coming in the 1-0 win over Japan in the quarterfinal round.
Although Lavelle did not play in the final, she started and played in five matches for a total of 366 minutes.
The gold medal match remained scoreless through the first half, but the U.S. scored in the 57th minute to defeat Brazil.Â
During her time at Wisconsin, Lavelle earned back-to-back Big Ten Midfielder of the Year (2015, 2016), four First Team All-Big Ten honors (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016), and NSCAA First Team All-American (2015) before going No. 1 overall in the NWSL draft.
Lavelle is the second Badger to medal in the 2024 Olympics, following women's soccer and hockey alum Alev Kelter (bronze, rugby).
