Women’s indoor volleyball earns fifth-straight medal
MADISON, Wis. -Â For the fifth-straight Olympics, the U.S. women's indoor volleyball team earned a medal, dating back to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In Sunday's gold medal match against Italy, Team USA fell 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 17-25).
Â
Leading up to the gold medal match, Italy had dropped just one set, while Team USA had three matches go five sets. The gold medal for the Italians marks its first-ever medal in women's indoor volleyball at the Olympics.Â
Â
Badger alumna, Lauren Carlini saw a little time in the medal game, tallying two digs with one set attempt. In the semifinal match against Brazil, however, Carlini played a pivotal defensive role in the fifth set, coming off the bench with eight digs. Fellow Badger alumna, Dana Rettke, did not see time on the court during the match against Italy, but came in for a few points against France in the preliminary round. Carlini and Rettke became the first Olympians in program history.
Â
With the Silver, the U.S. women have seven Olympic medals, the most of any country in women's indoor volleyball.Â
Â
The 2028 Summer Olympics will see Los Angeles as the host site where host country will automatically receive a spot in the tournament.
