No. 1 Badgers advance to Ice Breaker Tournament championship

Wisconsin beats Vermont 8-1 in first round

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The No.1 Wisconsin women's hockey team advanced to the championship game of the Ice Breaker Tournament after a 8-1 win against Vermont at M&T Bank Center in Schenectady, N.Y..

The first round matchup between Wisconsin and Vermont featured three multi-goal scoring performances from the Badgers; Caroline Harvey, Cassie Hall and Kelly Gorbatenko.

Alternate captain Lacey Eden acted quick for the first Wisconsin score, a power play goal just two minutes into the game.

Less than four minutes later, Laney Potter corralled a loose puck, and shot it into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

The second period scoring began when Captain Caroline Harvey scored her first goal of the night, scoring in her third straight game. Minutes later, Cassie Hall tipped one in while Vermont's goaltender was screened by another Badger, making it 4-0 Wisconsin with 10:37 remaining in the second. Hall's goal was assisted by sophomore Grace Bickett, her first point of the season.

Cassie Hall stayed hot and scored again after finding the puck from alternate captain Kelly Gorbatenko. The Badgers were up by five after the second period of play.

Gorbatenko decided to join the scoring action herself in the third, putting across two goals in the frame for her first multi-goal game of the season. Her first came off a redirect of a Vivian Jungels shot to put the Badgers up seven.

The alternate Captain's second goal came in the final two minutes of play, when both her and Harvey scored in the waning minutes to bring the team's total to eight. The Catamounts added their own score in the third, but ultimately the Badgers prevailed 8-1.

Wisconsin now faces the winner of Union and Saint Anselm in the championship game of the Ice Breaker Tournament.
