UW sweeps Minnesota for ninth consecutive victory
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The No. 10 Wisconsin volleyball team dominated in their final showing of the regular season, sweeping No. 18 Minnesota (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) to secure their ninth-straight victory.Â
The Badgers (24-4, 17-3) earned their first win over the Golden Gophers (22-9, 12-8) at The Pav since 2021, also notching the season sweep after defeating Minnesota a couple of weeks ago at the UW Field House.Â
The first set saw multiple runs by each unit, highlighted by an 8-0 burst from the Badgers. After Minnesota falling behind 15-10, the Golden Gophers rattled off five-straight points to tie up the match. UW responded immediately, putting together that 8-0 burst to take a 23-15 advantage into the latter stages of the first frame.Â
Outside hitter Una Vajagic powered the Badgers, tallying seven kills in set one. Middle blocker Alicia Andrew capitalized on an overpass during match point, as Wisconsin went on to win 25-18 to get their season finale started.Â
Set two provided a similar storyline, as Minnesota was able to answer a strong start from the Badgers. Right side Grace Egan, who entered the match leading the team in service aces, accumulated two within a 5-0 run to push the Badgers past the Golden Gophers in the second set.Â
After Minnesota turned in a 3-0 run to force a Badgers' timeout, outside hitter Mimi Colyer continued her dominance on the offensive end with a kill to make it 24-18. Vajagic capped it off shortly in one of her top performances of the season, tallying an ace to put Wisconsin up 2-0 heading into the third set.Â
The Badgers clicked on all cylinders in the third and final set, racking up 20 kills with only one hitting error. They finished with a hitting percentage of .543 in the frame.
Middle blocker Carter Booth was one of the standouts, leaving an emphatic mark in her final regular season match of her collegiate career. The senior recorded a season-best 12 kills against the Golden Gophers, hitting .522 (12 - 0 - 23). Booth was the terminator during match point in the final frame—putting away Minnesota for the second time this year.Â
The Denver, Colorado, native was one of three Badgers with double-figure kill totals. Colyer excelled once again with a team-high 13 kills, complemented by nine digs on the defensive end.Â
Vajagic earned her ninth double-double of the season with the help of 12 kills and 11 digs after a strong start in the first set.Â
UW utilized a strong serve to keep the Golden Gophers off balance all match, earning eight aces in comparison to Minnesota's three. The Badgers held Minnesota to a swinging percentage of .132 (26 - 14 - 91) on the evening. Libero Kristen Simon had 10 digs to reach double-digits for the 19th time this season.Â
Setter Charlie Fuerbringer once again orchestrated a smooth showing offensively, dishing out 39 assists to lead the Badgers to a hitting percentage of .385 (52 - 10 - 109) to wrap up conference play and the regular season.Â
Straight from the Court
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield (on the defensive effort tonight): "This was the best match we played all year defensively, especially our middle backs. The range that they were making plays at, hard-driven balls, it was a lot of really good stuff. We served the ball and got them in a lot of issues."
