Zelenov set to play for Austria in World Junior Championship Group A tourney

Badger freshman forward heading overseas for mid-December event

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin freshman forward Vasily Zelenov is taking part in preparation camp and looks to represent Austria at the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship Division 1 Group A event in Bled, Slovenia, that runs Dec. 6-13.

The winner of the tournament, which includes Austria, Slovenia, France, Norway, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, gets promoted to the main tournament for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Zelenov was born in Moscow, Russia, but moved to Austria and will play on the team along with his twin brother, Ivan. The official Austrian roster for the Group A tournament is expected to be named on Dec. 5. The preliminary group of players is gathering in Ferlach, Austria, for preparation camp.

The forward will miss this weekend's Badger series at Notre Dame.

This year's main World Junior Championship event takes place in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5. Badger sophomore defenseman Logan Hensler and freshman defenseman Luke Osburn were named to the U.S. National Junior Team preliminary roster on Monday.
