Wisconsin collects 2-1 win over Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio. — The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team took down the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes this Friday evening at OSU Ice Rink, securing a 2-1 victory in the teams' 2025 NCAA Championship rematch.
A spectacular performance in net from junior Ava McNaughton and goals from freshman Adéla Šapovalivoa and senior Caroline Harvey led to a Badgers win in the two teams' 12th straight top-two matchup.
The Badgers and the Buckeyes battled back and forth during the first period. Tensions were high, as both teams saw back-to-back coincident penalties, resulting in a four-minute stretch of 4-on-4 hockey.
Junior goaltender Ava McNaughton stayed busy, making nine saves in the first, including some high-danger chances in transition.
The Buckeyes opened the second period on the power play but were unable to capitalize after an effective Badger penalty kill.
A tripping penalty with just under four minutes to go brought UW back on the power play. Kirsten Simms found freshman Adéla Šapovalivová in front of the net, who snuck the puck between the legs of the tender to break the scoreless tie 1-0.
The Badgers had another successful penalty kill in the third and the score remained 1-0. Â
Both teams went 4-on-4 again late in the third period. After gathering the puck from teammate Lacey Eden in UW's defensive zone, Laila Edwards found captain Caroline Harvey streaking through center ice. There was no one between Harvey and the OSU goalie when the senior scored a huge insurance goal, making the score 2-0.
With 36 seconds left in the game, the Buckeyes responded, making it 2-1.
Both teams battled again with less than a minute of play remaining, but the Badgers stayed on top to collect another win.Â
Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 34-26.
