Two-year assistant departs to take over Terriers
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer assistant coach Ryan Osborne is off to Wofford College as their sixth head in program history.
The Wakefield, England, native, spent the past two years helping direct Badger men's soccer.
"Our program is extremely proud of Coach Ozzy, and thankful for everything he has given to this team," head coach Neil Jones said. "We wish him the best at Wofford, and congratulation to their program – they picked a fantastic person, and coach to lead them forward."
Osborne helped the Badgers to winning records in each of his seasons at UW, going 7-5-3 in 2024 and 6-5-6 in 2023.
He also helped coach Big Ten Freshman of the Year and forward Dean Boltz this past fall. Boltz went on to get picked at No. 3 in the MLS Super Draft by the Chicago Fire after the season, the highest pick in Badger history. Boltz also earned United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-North Region, All-Big Ten Second Team and Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors.
Other award winners during Osborne's time included 2024 Big Ten All-Freshman Team midfielder Matthew Zachemski, as well as 2023 All-North Region Second Team defender Birgir Baldvinsson and Third Team midfielder Tim Bielic. Both were also named All-Big Ten in 2023.
Osborne served as head coach at Mercyhurst for three and a half years before joining Wisconsin.
He led the Lakers to a 19-1-1 record in 2022, helping it win the PSAC Tournament Championship and a 10-0-0 regular-season conference mark to claim the top spot in the league. The school's historic season continued into the 2022 NCAA Division II Tournament where it earned a No. 3 seed and a home game. The program ranked as high as No. 2 during the season.
In three-plus seasons under Osborne, Mercyhurst went 37-5-3, including 17-1-2 in conference play. He started at MU in January of 2020 before COVID-19 hit and directed the team to a 6-0-0 mark in exhibition games during the spring of 2021. That fall, the Lakers posted a 12-4-2 record.
Osborne also coached at Notre Dame College and Marietta College in Ohio, as well as his alma mater, Charleston.
