Incoming frosh takes home league honor for best defenseman
MADISON, Wis. – Incoming Badger men's hockey freshman Luke Osburn has been named the United States Hockey League's (USHL) defenseman of the year, the league announced on Tuesday.

The Plymouth, Michigan, native spent the 2024-25 season skating for the Youngstown Phantoms, tallying 10 goals and 31 assists in 55 games played to lead all defensemen on the team with 41 points. His 41 points were good to rank fourth among all USHL defensemen, and his 0.75 points per game led all blueliners who played at least two games.
A fourth-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres at 108th overall at the 2024 NHL Draft, Osburn also received All-USHL First-Team honors for his outstanding season. On April 12, 2025, he set a new franchise record for most career goals by a defenseman with 18, a record set over two years and 115 games played with the Phantoms.
The defenseman finished the 2024-25 season with 20 power-play points, including 19 assists, and a plus-10 rating, helping the Phantoms to the second-lowest scoring defense in the nation with a 2.69 goals-against average.
Prior to skating for Youngstown, Osburn played for Compuware AAA from 2020-23.
