Wisconsin men's crew finds success at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Badger men's crew competed in the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 18, on Lake Quinsigamond.

Wisconsin brought four boats, competing in the first through fourth varsity eight races, and qualified for the petite final in each race.

The varsity eight boat finished third in the petite final for ninth overall, sending the crew to the championship in two weeks. The crew ended with a time of 5:43.16 over 2000 meters.

The second varsity eight boat completed the race in 5:55.081, earning them a fourth-place finish in the petite final for 10th overall.

The third varsity eight passed the finish line in fifth with a time of 6:05.561.

The fourth varsity eight finished in sixth in the petite final at 6:15.736.

UP NEXT: The Badgers will head to the 2025 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on May 30- June 1 in Camden, New Jersey.

Head Coach Beau Hoopman

"Racing was good, all things considered. There were fears on Saturday that the racing would be suspended or delayed on Sunday due to wind and fetch, but nothing unsafe ever materialized. All of our boats did better than 2024. Over the four boats, we totaled 11 less places than last year which is a pretty drastic improvement. The 1V getting ninth automatically qualified the team for IRA National Championships in two weeks, which is a relief".

"They were tested in their race from all sides but came through in the clutch for the squad and they're getting faster with each race. The 2V keeps getting better as well. They aren't the strongest crew, but they're racers and they will continue to gain speed going into the last two weeks of the season. The 3V and 4V have been moved around a lot looking for frosh to step into larger roles, so they haven't had time to gel as much as the 1V and 2V, but we'll press them into form by June. All in all it was a decent day and we're looking forward to Cherry Hill in 10 days".
