Badgers lead Big Ten in cross country, track and field

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin men's cross country and track and field program wrapped up its 2024-25 campaign with a fifth-place finish in the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings with 40.5 points.

The fifth spot marks the highest the Badgers' men's team has placed since the 2022-23 season, where they also finished in fifth in a tie with Texas. They completed the year as the top team in the Big Ten Conference.

UW was paced by its cross country program, which put together their best performance of the season with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships in November, hosted at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.

Bob Liking, fresh off of winning his fourth-straight Big Ten title,  walked away with All-American honors that day, leading the Badgers by notching 16th place in the 10K race with a time of 29 minutes, 9.2 seconds.

All five members of Wisconsin who scored placed within the top-70 to earn their highest placement in the race since 2018. Adam Spencer, Micah Wilson, Matan Ivri and Christian de Vaal rounded out the scoring for the Badgers, who finished with a team total of 212 points.

At the race, they finished as the only team in the Big Ten to complete the day with a top-10 team finish.

Throughout the indoor track and field season, UW found success—capping off the year by sending six athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Badgers earned third place at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, tallying a rank of 16th in the USTFCCCA poll to end the season.

Jason Swarens, Joseph White and Spencer garnered first-team All-America honors for their performances down in Virginia Beach, Virginia, highlighted by Spencer earning bronze in the 3000 meters.

The men's DMR rounded it out, as Spencer was joined by the likes of Jalen Williams, Andrew Casey and Patrick Hilby, who advanced to No. 2 all-time in school history in the event.

It was more of the same in the outdoor season, as Swarens led the way by recently earning the individual title in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

Swarens went on to break the school record during the season—cementing himself as one of the top throwers in program history. White followed suit with another All-American award, this time in the shot put.

Spencer earned fourth place in the 1500 meters to put a bow on a stellar 2024-25 for the Badgers, adding more to a legendary resume at his time at Wisconsin.

Cole Hooper, Williams, Casey and Hilby each made their first appearances at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to help power the Badgers in the rankings as well.
