O’Brien, Wozniewicz picked in PWHL Draft

Patty Kaz winner goes third overall, Wozniewicz goes 21st

OTTAWA - Wisconsin women's hockey seniors Casey O'Brien and Sarah Wozniewicz were selected in the 2025 Professional Women's Hockey League Draft Tuesday evening.

O'Brien became the first Badger in league history to be drafted in the first round as the senior captain went third overall to the New York Sirens, who traded back into the first round to pick her. Wozniewicz was picked by the Ottawa Charge, coached by Badger legend and Wozniewicz's high school coach Carla MacLeod, with the 21st overall pick.

A co-captain of the 2025 National Championship team and 2025 Patty Kazmaier Award recipient, O'Brien shattered multiple school records en route to three NCAA titles during her time in Madison. The forward ended her career with 97 goals and 177 assists for a program-best 274 points. Her 183 games played and +203 career plus/minus also top the Wisconsin record books. She has performed on the international stage as well, contributing to the U.S. securing gold medal finishes at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship and the 2024 Six Nations Tournament.

An influential member of two NCAA championship teams, Wozniewicz skated in all 41 contests during the 2024-25 season, setting a career-high of 21 points on nine goals and 12 assists. During her four seasons in Madison, she totaled 71 points and six game-winning goals, including the deciding goal that led the Badgers to the 2025 WCHA Final Faceoff title against Minnesota. Before her time at Wisconsin, the Alberta native represented Canada at the 2020 IIHF U18 Women's World Championship.

The PWHL is entering its third year during the 2025-26 season. During the 2024-25 season, 15 Badgers skated in the league as the trio of Natalie Buchbinder, Mellissa Channell-Watkins and Britta Curl-Salemme led the Minnesota Frost to its second-straight Walter Cup title.
