Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 1 Wisconsin shuts out Bemidji, 5-0 for series sweep

UW outscores BSU 14-2 in the series, starts season 2-0-0

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey swept its way past Bemidji State on Saturday, claiming a 5-0 victory over its conference opponent in game two of the series.

The Badgers (2-0-0, 2-0-0) secured their first shutout of the season, with junior Ava McNaughton going a perfect 12-for-12 on save opportunities. A three-goal first period gave UW a lead that was never relinquished.

The Badger defense was stout from the drop, with the Beavers unable to come up with a shot-on-goal during the entirety of the first period.

Late in the first, the Badgers experienced both ends of a goal review. After an unsuccessful challenge stood as a no-goal, freshman Adéla Šapovalivová's scored the game's first goal, which then went under-review. The score was confirmed, giving Šapovalivová her first career goal to make it 1-0.

Maggie Scannell added another goal just moments later, one-timing a feed from Finley McCarthy. Scannell's goal came off the back of a hat trick in the previous night of the series.

With just 13.4 seconds left remaining in the period, Cassie Hall laid out on the ice to tap in a rebound from Laney Potter, ending the first period with the Badgers up 3-0.

Ava McNaughton was busy during the second period, recording eight saves. Shots were back and forth between the Badgers and the Beavers, with neither team being able to put the puck in the net.

That was until senior Laila Edwards tipped one after a Caroline Harvey shot attempt with 4:05 remaining in the second period. The Badgers finished the second period with a 13-8 edge in shots on goal.

Kirsten Simms tacked on the final score of the game in the third period, going off the post for her third goal of the series.

The Badgers nixed any potential Bemidji scoring chances after that, holding BSU to an 0-for-2 mark on power play opportunities in the third, and 0-for-4 in the game.
