UW second varsity eight wins against Columbia
FAIRLEE, Vt. – The No.14 Badgers wrapped up the second and final day at the Lake Morey Invite on Sunday, April 26. The Wisconsin men's crew raced against No. 17 Columbia to close out its time in Vermont.Â
Wisconsin's second varsity eight boat found success, coming in first. UW crossed the finish line at 5:59.5, faster than Columbia's 6:04.5 for 2000 meters.
The first and third varsity eight boats fell to Columbia. The UW varsity eight boat finished with a time of 5:52.1, just seconds short of Columbia's 5.48.9. The third varsity eight boat showed similar results. The Badgers came in second place in 6:09.6.
Straight from the Shore Head Coach Beau Hoopman:Â "The third varsity eight, which had seven freshman, improved each race over the weekend -- they are getting closer. Good for the young group. They are learning how to race on their own without our older guys propping them up.
The second varsity eight is on a heater. Good racing there.Â
The 1V fell behind and sat. The effort was there but the boat wasn't able to make up that ground effectively. We will work on starts, and how to take advantage of their length. They'll get there."
Thomas Leuty "The program as a whole did a good job having a powerful base, especially shown in the 1V walking back against Dartmouth. We need to work on leveraging our aggression and getting length to gain and keep boat speed at the book ends of a race. We will put a lot of work into getting faster starts before Eastern Sprints so we can show up ready to compete."
Up next: The Badgers head back east to compete in the Eastern Sprints regatta, their conference championship. UW will race on Lake Quinnsigamond in Worcester, Massachutts, on Sunday, May 17, for the event.
