  • Big Ten Conference indoor mile champion in 1917

  • Upon graduation in 1917, he entered the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant and went immediately into combat in World War I
  • Left for dead for two-and-a-half days in No Man's Land after the horrific and decisive battle of Argonne Forest; 28 pieces of shrapnel were removed from his body
  • Placed second in the mile at the 1919 American Expeditionary Forces Championships
  • Won gold medal in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium, in the 3000 meters team race, becoming the first Badger to win a gold medal at the Olympics
  • Coached at South Division High School in Milwaukee
  • Strong advocate of women's sports
