Men's Swimmers Handle Huskies

The Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team opened its 2001-02 season with a solid win over Northern Illinois, 136-95, Friday night at DeKalb, Ill. Eight individuals captured the top spot in their respective events and the 400-yard medley relay also walked away with a win.
'I'm extremely happy with the way we competed, ' coach Eric Hansen said.
Junior Brian Neuman (Hartland, Wis.) picked up two victories for the Badgers, garnering 18 individual points with wins in the 200 IM and 200 breaststroke.
Six other Badgers grabbed the No. 1 spot in their events, including senior co-captain Brendan Coyne (Pelham, Ala.) in the 100 free, junior Matt Zuiderhof (LaPlata, Md.) in the 500 free and sophomore Pat Torpey (Mentor, Ohio) in the 200 fly.
Freshman Tim Liebhold (Chapel Hill, N.C.) made a splash for the Badgers in his first collegiate action, taking first in the 200 back and second in the 200 IM.
Bucky dominated the relay events, taking first and second in the 400-yard medley relay to open the meet. The Badgers also captured top times participating in the 400 free relay, but in exhibition ' a swim for time but not scored.
'One of our main team goals is to be solid in all relays, ' Hansen said. 'Tonight we proved we're on track with that goal. '
Wisconsin will take a week off before returning to competition. In their home opener and first of only three home events this year, the Badgers will face Iowa on Oct. 26-27 at the UW Natatorium.
