Badgers shine at U.S. Swimming National Championships

UW swimmers collect seven top-eight finishes
IRVINE, Calif. — The Wisconsin men's and women's swim and dive programs wrapped up a successful slate of summer competition at the U.S. Swimming National Championships on July 28 to Aug. 1.
Junior Maggie Wanezek impressed in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke events, earning three silver medals and notching three world-ranked swims in the process. The Wisconsin native's 2:07.08 finish in the 200 backstroke was just shy of the 2:06.05 mark she set at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis last month, which currently ranks fourth in the world.
Wanezek and alum Phoebe Bacon stacked the 100 backstroke final for the Badgers, earning a second and fourth place finish, respectively.
Sophomore Enzo Solitario added two top-eight finishes and two program records across the weekend, bringing home some hardware with a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly.
Sophomore Brooke Corrigan followed suit with two strong swims of her own. The Illinois native earned a personal best finish in the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.66, good for a sixth overall finish, while dropping an eighth of a second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.02 for a new personal best.
Stella Chapman downed the program-record in the 400 IM, setting a new 4:47.22 record before collecting a new personal best in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.30. Brayden Henkel's 28.19 appearance in the 50 breaststroke also added a new program record.
In the 200 backstroke, Badger alum Michael Long and sophomore Adam Graham stacked the B final, collecting ninth and 11th place finishes, respectively, to add to the Badgers' success across the weekend.

As summer competition continues, Wisconsin divers Zara Karimi, Ryane Neal, Julia Herring and Lucas Daniels wrap up the fifth day of competition at the USA Diving National Championships in Morgantown, West Virginia, on August 11.
On the international stage, senior Luukas Vainio and junior Yoav Romano will take the stage at the European Championships on August 10-16 in Paris. Vainio will be representing Finland and Romano will be representing Israel. Incoming freshmen Ben Cescon and Taryn Weatherhead will be representing Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Vancouver on August 17-20.
