Junior Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Saskatchewan) used two goals and one assist in becoming the first Badger to reach 100 points for her career as No. 4 Wisconsin defeated St. Cloud State, 4-2, on Saturday. Antony scored the first two goals of the game and assisted on the UW's final tally in reaching the milestone.
The Badger success on the power play last night continued early in tonight's contest. At 12:22, Wisconsin (2-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) took a 1-0 lead on Antony's first goal of the season. Meghan Hunter (Oil Springs, Ontario) fired a slapshot from 15 feet inside the blue line that Antony got a stick on to deflect past goaltender Laura Gieselman. Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska) made the original feed to Hunter for the second assist.
Antony struck again exactly two minutes later, thanks in large part to Carla MacLeod (Calgary, Alberta). Hunter handed the puck off to MacLeod as she skated down the right boards. MacLeod drove to the corner and hit a wide-open Antony in the right slot. Antony redirected the puck and found the net just inside the far post.
MacLeod worked the left boards for Wisconsin's third goal, pinching to keep the puck in the zone and skating the puck into the corner. This time Kelly Kegley (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) found space in the slot and turned a MacLeod pass into a one-time wrist shot the found Gieselman's five hole. Kegley's first of the season came at 16:26.
The Huskies (0-2-0, 0-2-0) got on the board late in the period, with only 38 seconds remaining. Kobi Kawamoto skated into the Badger zone and lost the puck on a poke check. Alison Riber recovered the puck and shot. Kawamoto jumped on the rebound and forced Jackie MacMillan (Buffalo, Minn.) into a spectacular save, but MacMillan was unable to handle the second rebound as Kawamoto tallied her first of the year.
St. Cloud carried the momentum they gained from its late goal into the second period. The Huskies controlled play much of the period and outshoot the Badgers 13-8. MacMillan and the Badgers withstood the pressure and kept SCSU off the scoreboard.
Wisconsin regained some momentum as the third period began, and then got back its three-goal lead when Steph Millar (Hudson, Wis.) scored on a rebound. Antony fed Kathy Devereaux (Seaforth, Ontario), who's wrist shot from the right of Gieselman bounced accross the slot after the goaltender made the initial save. Millar chipped the loose puck over the sprawled netminder for her first of the season. Antony 's 57th career assist on the goal at 13:51, was her 100th career point.
The Huskies would answer once more, on a 5-on-3 advantage. Roxy Stang beat MacMillan on assists from Dana Pretty and Tina Ciraulo. The goal would close out the scoring at 16:38 of the third.
The Badgers went 2-for-4 on the power play after going 3-for-7 last night. The Wisconsin penalty kill was almost equally successful, killing five of six St. Cloud State power plays.
MacMillan won for the second straight night with a 34-svae effort. She improves to 2-0-0 on the season. Gieselman made 35 saves, but absorbed her second loss in as many games.
In its next action, Wisconsin plays its home opener at the Kohl Center. Connecticut visits Madison for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21. Both games begin at 2:35 p.m.
