Women's Hockey Climbs in Polls
October 30, 2001 | Women's Hockey
The Wisconsin women's hockey team (4-0-2 overall, 3-0-1 WCHA) climbed two spots in this week's USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll release Tuesday. The Badgers also open the season in the U.S. College Hockey Online Poll as the No. 5 team in the nation. The Badgers were propelled by a win and tie against then-No. 10 Ohio State this past weekend.
In the USA Today Poll, Minnesota-Duluth (3-0-1, 1-0-1) holds onto its No. 1 ranking with all 13 first-place votes and 130 points. Dartmouth stays second with 117 points. The remaining eight spots in the poll changed. Brown moved up to third, but still has not played a game. Northeastern made the largest jump, moving to seventh after not being ranked this season. The Huskies swept St. Lawrence, which fell from third to eight in the rankings. Minnesota also dropped four spots from fifth to ninth after losing a game to Niagara.
In the USCHO Poll, the top three teams look the same, but St.Lawrence ranks fourth, ahead of fifth-ranked Wisconsin. Minnesota is sixth in the new poll.
The Badgers face consensus No. 1 and defending NCAA Champion Minnesota-Duluth this week at the Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, Wis. The games, Friday and Saturday, begin at 7:05 p.m.
