Badgers, WCHA All-Stars Fall To Team USA
October 05, 2001 | Women's Hockey
The WCHA All-Star team dropped a 3-0 game to the 2001 U.S. Women's National Team at the Kohl Center on Friday night. After a scoreless first period, USA scored once in the second and twice more in the third for the win.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period with Team USA outshooting the all-stars, 9-3. The best chance of the period for the all-stars came when Badger sophomore Kendra Antony (Yorkton, Sask.) eyed a rebound behind USA goaltender Sarah Tueting. Antony was held up by a USA defender before getting her stick on the loose puck.
USA's Jenny Potter converted at 15:05 of the second period on a rebound to open the scoring. Karyn Bye deflected a Sue Merz left point shot that WCHA goalie Tuula Puputti stopped. The rebound went to Potter who sat alone in the right slot.
Team USA added a pair in the third to put the game away. Tricia Dunn scored off her own rebound after her first shot clanked off the post, 2:01 into the stanza. Katie King then clinched it with a wrist shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle at 7:11.
Puputti made 47 saves to help keep the WCHA in the game the entire night. Team USA netminder Sarah Tueting made 15 saves to earn the shut out.
Four Badgers, including junior captain Sis Paulsen (Eau Claire, Wis.), junior Kerry Weiland (Palmer, Alaska), sophomore Karen Rickard (Bowmanville, Ontario) and Antony, saw the ice for the all-stars. Paulsen and Weiland started, logging a large portion of the ice time on defense. Also skating was Badger Nicole Uliasz (Perkasie, Pa.), who is part of the 2001 U.S. Women's National Team.
The WCHA All-Stars and Team USA meet again tomorrow at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The game is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start.
