Badgers Shutdown Michigan Tech 5-0
November 17, 2001 | Men's Hockey
With renewed energy after Friday's loss, the Wisconsin Badgers handed the visiting Michigan Tech Huskies a 5-0 loss Saturday at the Kohl Center. A overall team effort by the Badgers produced their five goal count by five different players, while Wisconsin goaltender Scott Kabotoff earned the win with 33 total saves, including 17 in the third period.
Wisconsin opened up the game scoring three fast goals in the first period. Sophomore Andy Wozniewski found the net for UW's first goal off assists from Brad Winchester and Dan Boeser. Wozniewski and Brian Fahey came back to assist senior David Hukalo on the Badgers' second goal two minutes later, followed by a Matt Hussey goal at 11:00 on the clock. Winchester and Boeser teamed up again for the assists to end the first period 3-0.
In a game of more penalties than shots on goal for either team individually, the second period remained scoreless in front of the Kohl Center crowd. But just minutes into the third period, Wisconsin captain Andy Wheeler brought the crowd back to their feet after slicing the puck past Huskies' netminder Brian Rogers. The goal, off an assist from Hukalo, was Wheeler's fifth of the season.
The Huskies came back hard against the Badgers, but Kabotoff held his own in net stopping every shot before a fight erupted between the two teams. Only three minutes after Wheeler's goal, the Badgers and Huskies split a barrage of 11 penalties between them in addition to each losing a player to game disqualification.
Senior Kent Davyduke left for the Badgers, while Michigan Tech senior Paul Cabana returned to the lockerroom for the Huskies. The game saw 38 total penalties.
The Badgers would not be deterred however, and left defenseman Boeser lit up the goal for the Badgers' fifth and final goal of the night. Wisconsin sophomore John Eichelberger and Hussey pitched in for the assists as the Badgers added one more shutout to their season totals.
Now 6-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the WCHA, Wisconsin travels to Michigan State next Friday, followed by a game against Michigan Saturday.
