September 24, 2001 | Football
Senior defensive tackle Wendell Bryant registered a school record-tying six tackles-for-loss, including five quarterback sacks (one short of the school mark), one fumble recovery and three quarterback hurries in the Badgers' 18-6 victory at Penn State last Saturday.
In addition to being named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Bryant is Wisconsin's athlete of the week.
The St. Louis, Mo., native is living up to his billing as the Big Ten 's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, as well as a serious contender for numerous national honors. Bryant leads the Big Ten in tackles for loss with nine and quarterback sacks with seven. A fixture in opposing backfields this season, Bryant also tops the Badgers with eight QB hurries.
The consumer science major, who interned at a local Merrill Lynch office this past summer, has started 27 of the last 28 games. He needs five QB sacks to move into fourth place all-time at the UW.
